A Day In The Life of Jonathan, Grade 1No one can better tell you what the SSDS experience is like than our own students. Some of our students have taken the time to talk a little about a typical day in school. Enjoy!Hi,
After waking up, eating breakfast and packing my backpack I get in the car. My Mom drives us to school every day. My sister is still in preschool and she can’t take the bus yet. Next year, we might be able to take the bus sometimes. When I get to school, I go to my classroom and put my backpack into my cubby. My cubby is in the Judaic Studies room. On some days I start in Judaic Studies and others I start in General Studies. I am going to tell you about Tuesday. On Tuesdsay, I begin in General Studies. As soon as I come into the classroom, I sit down and write in my journal. There is always a prompt on the board. We call this “write on”. After “write-on”, we say the Pledge of Allegiance and sing Hatikvah. We then start working. Sometimes we do math, sometimes we study poetry or sometimes we work on the topic that we are studying in social studies like heroes or Japan. When we do math, we break into groups. We do the same for reading. We have three teachers—one for general studies, one for Judaic studies and one that helps in both classrooms. Reading groups are my favorite in-class activity. 10:00—snack time! We bring snack from home. The whole grade goes into the Judaic Studies classroom to eat and talk. My favorite snack is pretzels and cheese sticks. I also really like when I get fluoride water. After snack, I stay in the Judaic studies room. We do Choveret (workbook) and sing a lot of songs. In the workbooks, we trace Hebrew letters, circle words and answer questions. Our teacher speaks to us in English and Hebrew. When we know the words by heart she says them in Hebrew, like the colors for example. Lunch time is at 12:00 noon. I bring my lunch sometimes and order sometimes. My favorite lunch is WackyMac! The 1st grade has a few tables were we always sit. We don’t have assigned seats in the lunch room. After lunch we have recess and I like to play on the playground with my friends. We come back inside at 1:00 and do somework in General Studies before it is time for gym. I like to play red rover and soccer in gym. My favorite thing about Mr. C is that he is funny. This is my favorite part of the week. After gym, we go to music with Mrs. Searle. She is really funny. She knows how to play the piano. We sing lots of songs and we do clapping patterns and singing patters. I think those are really fun. Right now we are preparing for the Siddur presentation. We are putting on a big program for our parents. Then someone special will give us our Siddur. I can’t wait. We have an afternoon snack as well. I like granola bars or cool ranch Doritos. The whole class goes into the general studies classroom. We get to read books and take a break. On Monday, I go to aftercare for about an hour because my Mother leads the running club. I like to play with marbles in aftercare. I do some fun extra curricular activities. I play violin, I play soccer with the town and take skiing lessons in the winter. I hope I get a chance to meet you when you visit SSDS. |
