Be part of an inspiring night as we celebrate Schechter's legacy, honor those who have helped it flourish, and look ahead to the future we are building together.
Presenting Riva Lewinter with the Leah Berson Volunteer Award
Riva Lewinter's deep commitment to Jewish life and community has shaped both her personal and professional journey—and left a lasting impact on Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Hartford. Her connection to Judaism began at Camp Ramah in New England, where she discovered the joy and meaning of Jewish living, a foundation that continues to guide her leadership and service.
Riva’s connection to Schechter began as a parent of three alumni, including her youngest, Sophie, whose love for the school inspired their family’s first legacy gift. That experience sparked Riva’s dedication to ensuring future generations of students can access a quality Jewish education at Schechter. A volunteer in every sense of the word, Riva has given her time, talent, and treasure to benefit Schechter for more than two decades. Over the past ten years on the Board, particularly during her tenure as Board President, she has championed legacy giving and long-term sustainability, helping to secure the school’s vibrant future.
A graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, Riva was an early pioneer in the emerging field of Emergency Medicine. She completed her residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, and later moved to Hartford to establish the Emergency Medicine residency program at Hartford Hospital. Her medical expertise further benefitted Schechter during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as she partnered with school leadership to develop protocols that enabled Schechter to reopen safely and swiftly.
Beyond Schechter, Riva is an active member of Beth El Temple, participated in the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford's Community Leadership Initiative (CLI), and is now serving as co-chair of Federation's Israel and Overseas Investment Committee. She has also played a key role in advancing Schechter’s participation in the Life & Legacy program through the Jewish Community Foundation, as well as the EndowHartford21 initiative.
Riva describes herself as someone who loves to “social work”—building relationships, strengthening community, and bringing people together. She is deeply grateful to her husband David Kruger for his unwavering support, which has made her volunteer leadership possible.
