The Hebrew expression "Ner Tamid" signifies an enduring flame, like the one you see on our logo. Our annual Ner Tamid Gala is a community celebration supporting Schechter. Each year we come together as a community to support our school and honor those who have made an enduring contribution both within the school and beyond.
On Sunday, March 19, 2023 we celebrated both in-person at The Emanuel Synagogue in West Hartford, CT and virtually through our livestreamed event. This year we were thrilled to honor Schechter Alumnae and sisters Jenny Shechtman & Rachel Shechtman. We also be presented the Leah Berson Volunteer Award to Karen Tuvin. All proceeds from this annual event supports the school's Scholarship Fund so that a Schechter education is accessible to all.
Rachel and Jennyattended Schechter from Early Childhood into Middle School. The values and education they received provided the skills necessary to think creatively and strategically, leading to their 2011 co-founding of the highly regarded NYC concept store, STORY. Their belief that retail’s potential is more than just a transaction. Retail can make connections through community-based storytelling. This belief enabled STORY to attract sponsors like American Express, GE, NBC, Lexus and Cigna. Combining their talents for seven years, with Rachel as CEO and Jenny as COO, they sold STORY to Macy’s, Inc. Rachel was recognized in Fortune Magazine’s 40 Under 40 before she was named the first Entrepreneur in Residence at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 2022. Jenny consulted with companies on organizational design, learning and training programs, and operations before joining New Stand, an employee experience start-up, as COO in 2022. Both sisters credit their achievements to values they learned from their parents and their Schechter experiences.

Karen Tuvin is the 2023 recipient of the Leah Berson Award for Excellence in Volunteerism. For the past eight years, Karen has been instrumental in creating a welcoming Schechter community as Parent Association president. During that time, she brought countless families together overseeing and executing programs including Shabbat dinners, meal trains, Purim baskets, book fairs, end of year picnics and new family programming.
